About United Communities of San Antonio (UCSA)
The formal founding of UCSA was in 1954 and established as The National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ).
Appointed Director, Charles Malloy, a protestant minister, provided leadership for local and area activities.
The work of UCSA was well known in San Antonio as early as the 1920's as it responded to the schisms and fears evoked by
the expression of bigotry and hatred present in those years.
In 2006, the Executive Board announced that the local organization would be known as "United Communities of San Antonio."
The change to the organization's name has strengthened our efforts in promoting understanding and respect among diverse
ethnic groups, religions and cultures through awareness, education and dialogue. UCSA's independence continues to afford
us total control over local donations so that we may assure our donors that their full support is being used to address local
intergroup relations.
Why UCSA?
- Because the voice of hatred is loud on the Internet and hate crimes are increasing.
- Because stereotyping and bias still influence actions and daily practices.
- Because bullying, harassment and exclusion still exists.
- Because our community is becoming more diverse, we must strengthen inter-group relations.
- Because we believe in the promise of America. Only through unified community efforts will we be able to overcome the
forces of miscommunication, hatred, prejudice, exclusion and discord to create whole, inclusive, just communities.
America still suffers from separatism, misunderstanding, suspicion and intolerance. This is the reality to which the staff of
UCSA "bends its strength," in the words of our founders, seeking to open minds, change attitudes, touch hearts and tilt human
behavior toward the thoughtful, the humane and the constructive by promoting cooperation and mutual understanding among
all people, regardless of religion, ethnic or cultural background.
We are most grateful to our many partners who continue to support UCSA and who embrace diversity and growth opportunity
for our community.
