United Communities of San Antonio (UCSA) has built
a distinguished record of service to our community
through programs dealing with youth and education;
inter-group relation; dialogue and concerns of the
community.
It is our intent to make available a means to help the
dialogue that is indispensable to the multicultural
process. To reach out, understand and respect the
very different cultural styles of our increasingly
diverse community. Each program/workshop is
tailored to meet the specific needs, goals and time
frames.
Programs provided by UCSA include...
Understanding and Appreciating Our Differences
A middle and high school based workshop that allows students and faculty to discuss what each
person brings to school and the community (i.e., ethnicity, culture, gender, etc.) and how these
affect their relationships with others. The workshop opens the door to increasing participants'
awareness of their school and community as well as their appreciation of group and individual
differences.
Conflict Resolution
Training
A school based program
for all levels that provides
basic conflict resolution
training for students and
others wanting to engage
in intervention of
conflicts. This program
provides knowledge and
skills related to resolving
conflicts, active listening
and communication skills.
Diversity/Prejudice
Reduction Training
Workshops
a community based
program opportunity to
focus on clarifying their
values, conflict resolution
and management
understanding diversity,
cultural appreciation and
effective cross-cultural
communication skills.
Teacher In-Service Training
Provides educators and administrators an opportunity to learn skills in cross/intercultural
communication and how to deal with multiculturalism in the classroom. This training also allows
participants an opportunity to explore issues surrounding diversity represented in their classroom,
school and community.
Feedback from UCSA Program Participants

"I watched delegates become firm advocates in
the program and learn how to respect
themselves. I watched them open their hearts
and minds to the cultural diversity and become
more open-minded. All my peers and I are the
leaders of both today and tomorrow, but without
your support, we would not be able to be the
most capable”
I knew that this
organization was
going to be the root
to my life. Everything
I decide to do is a
direct decision from
the lessons I
learned from UCSA.
From being a quiet,
shy and scared
young female, to a
dependent,
outspoken and
strong woman. I
know that this
organization must
continue for the
good of our future."
"I learned more about myself, friends, and
even people I've never met before. At first I
did not believe in the process. The process
was not easy but it was the hardship within
me, not only believe in the leaders but the
process as well. I can assure you this
program definitely changed my perspective
on life and many other things."
"Being a former student of five different
elementary schools... I have yet to
experience a presentation that gave me the
confidence to stand up for what I believe
and what my heart felt. I am capable of
taking the everyday challenges of life by
speaking with the intentions to benefit
people in my environment, to not be afraid to
follow my heart, to meet new people and
leave non excluded, and most of all, to
become a leader, unite and follow amongst
friends, acquaintances and strangers."
"UCSA is awesome and everyone should
experience it. It's helpful to adults and students
alike. It has taught me more awareness about
issues in our community (youth and adult)."
"I would love this program to continue because
it really allowed me to open up and bear
others' personal experiences to help me out in
everyday things. I feel that this program taught
me a ton about diversity and stereotyping. This
program also taught me that it is not a good
thing to judge anyone."
"This is the most awesome program I have
ever attended. Now I have a better
understanding of how I behave and what I
need to change. I feel it would benefit all
students."
"I believe this program can help individuals
grow and this can strengthen our community.
This program just continues to reinforce my
beliefs about others and myself. I know this
program is successful."
"This program means the world to me. It has
allowed me to open up and release feelings
that I have held inside for years. It has given
me the courage to stand up for others. It has
also helped me through the years to accept
myself and create change."
"This program is an eye-opener, life changing
experience. It really opened my mind and my
heart, I am in love with this program."
"I feel that this program should continue
because I want others to see what it is like to
be teased and to learn not to be a bad person.
This workshop inspired me. It was great and I
loved it."
